Levi's: Odyssey

Sony PlayStation: Double Life

For years, I've lived a double life. In the day, I do my job I ride the bus, roll up my sleeves with the hoi polloi. But at night, I live a life of exhilaration, of missed heartbeats and adrenalin. And, if the truth be known, a life of dubious virtue. I won't deny it I've been engaged in violence, even indulged in it. I've maimed and killed adversaries and not merely in self-defence. I've exhibited disregard for life, limb and property, and savoured every moment. You may not think it, to look at me, but I have commanded armies and conquered worlds. And though in achieving these things I've set morality aside, I have no regrets. For though I've led a double life, at least I can say: I've lived.

American Express: Robert Deniro

For Tribeca Film Festival in 2004. Directed by Martin Scorsese.

Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese and celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz were commissioned by American Express to lend their vision to elements of the campaign creative. Scorsese, who directed DeNiro’s television spot, has directed DeNiro in award-winning films, but this is their first foray into the television commercial arena together. Leibovitz photographed each featured person for the print campaign.

Shot on location in New York City , Florida , Los Angeles and Hawaii , the concept of each is original to the person it represents, and was refined in collaboration with the featured individual. The campaign unfolds in an intimate narrative format, with each storyline reflecting the places, causes, achievements and avocations that are meaningful to each person. Design touches like handwriting, signatures and snapshots lend a personal feeling to the campaign, in addition to each individual’s customization of the “My life. My card.” tagline for the closing frame of their ad.

Anti-Slavery PSA: Closer

Client: Anti-Slavery
Title: "Closer"

Writer/Director: Jorn Threlfall
Production Company: Outsider
Executive Producer: Robert Campbell
Producer: Benji Howell
DP: Richard Mott
Editorial: Final Cut, London
Editor: Adam Rudd
Telecine/Post: MPC, London

Music/Sound Design: Grand Central, London
Sound Designer: Raja Seghal, Miles

"This project was incredibly important to me," says Threlfall, who wrote and directed the piece on spec. "In our work as advertisers, we often comment on the lighter side or the more aesthetic side of life. The notion that sex trafficking is closer than we think, and the horror of what is going on in this civilized country we think we live in, this was a message worth disseminating."

The advert was inspired by Walter Crane's 1893 painting "Neptune's Horses". The text also draws inspiration from Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick, including the line "Ahab says, 'I don't care who you are, here's to your dream.'" (which does not actually appear in the novel).

The music track in the advert was created by British band Leftfield and eventually this formed the basis of their track "Phat Planet" which appears on their 1999 album "Rhythm And Stealth".

Apple: Crazy Ones

The campaign was made almost entirely in-house by the team at TBWA\Chiat\Day\Los Angeles:

Chairman and chief creative officer worldwide & account director: Lee Clow. Creative directors: Ken Segall, Rob Siltanen, Eric Grunbaum, Amy Moorman. Executive producer, director & art director: Jennifer Golub. Art directors: Jessica Schulman, Margaret Midgett, Susan Alinsangan. Copywriter: Craig Tanimoto. Senior editor of the in-house arm, Venice Beach Editorial: Dan Bootzin. Stock photo and film research Susan Nickerson, owner and head stock-footage researcher, with Nickerson Research. Project coordination was served from Apple crew under supervision of Björn Steiner.

"Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."
